Dr. Wittig has established himself as a distinguished figure in the field of orthopedic oncology, with a career spanning over two decades. Most recently, he served as the medical director of orthopedic surgery, orthopedic oncology and sarcoma surgery at Atlantic Health in Morristown, New Jersey, from 2018 to 2025. During this period, he also served as chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Morristown Medical Center. His leadership and expertise were instrumental in transforming a community-based orthopedic program into a nationally recognized orthopedic teaching institution within just four years.
Before his tenure at Atlantic Health, Dr. Wittig was the vice chairman of orthopedic surgery and chief of orthopedic oncology and sarcoma surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, now known as Hackensack Meridian Health, from 2005 to 2018. His contributions during this time were pivotal in establishing one of the busiest orthopedic oncology programs in the country, despite being a solo practitioner. Additionally, he served as chief of orthopedic oncology and sarcoma surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, now part of the Mount Sinai Health System, from 2007 to 2013.
Dr. Wittig’s career began at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, where he worked as an orthopedic oncologist from 2001 to 2007 and established the first public orthopedic oncology clinic at Bellevue Hospital for the vulnerable population in Manhattan. His dedication to his field is further evidenced by his membership in esteemed organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and the Clinical Orthopaedic Society. These affiliations underscore his commitment to advancing the field of orthopedic oncology.
His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his professional achievements. Dr. Wittig completed a unique two year clinical fellowship in orthopedic oncology and sarcoma surgery at Washington Hospital Center, Washington Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., in 2001. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery as an executive chief resident at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1999 after an internship in general surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Medical Center in New York City in 1995. He earned his MD with Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) distinction from NYU Grossman School of Medicine in 1994, following a Bachelor of Science in biology with summa cum laude distinction from Seton Hall University in 1990.
Dr. Wittig holds board certification from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and maintains medical licensure in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Pennsylvania. He attributes his success to his upbringing in a hardworking family that emphasized service, education and helping others—values that have guided him throughout his career.
His contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including being named one of the Best Doctors – Orthopedic Surgeon by New York Magazine and a Top Doctor in America for Cancer by Castle Connolly in 2022. He has also been honored as Teacher of the Year twice, once by New York University in 2007 and again in 2015. In 2018, he was awarded the Nobility in Science award by the Sarcoma Foundation of America for his contributions to the field of limb sparing sarcoma surgery.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Wittig is dedicated to personal growth and well-being. He loves spending his time with his son, Ronnie, whom he adopted in 2015 after Ronnie lost his mom to sarcoma related complications. Dr. Wittig is a dog and pet therapy enthusiast. He also enjoys fitness activities such as weightlifting, swimming and hiking while also exploring spiritual music and hypnotherapy.
